Vector Illustration from Sketch

Vector Illustration from Sketch

A few weeks ago, I posted an initial character sketch, and said I would follow up with the digital version later. This started as a custom illustration for a client, but as I got further into this project, the illustration started to look younger than what was needed for the client. Although I ended up going in a different direction for the final graphic, this digital illustration was still a step in the process.

I’m really not sure how long I spent on this particular illustration, at least a few hours (not in one sitting, but spread out over days). The lips were the hardest part for me – I could never get them to look how I wanted. And I dropped my Wacom pen (for my tablet) somewhere in the process and the magnet in it broke. Then, while trying to fix it, I snapped the pen’s motherboard in two. So, I started using a pen and tablet and ended the illustration using a mouse.

After completing this vector illustration, I feel a lot more comfortable with the pen tool in Illustrator. Only thing is now I get confused about the pen tool in Photoshop vs. Illustrator (as they both behave differently)!

  1. great job! I like the mouth – it is just stylized enough. I have struggled with the differences between the pen tool in Illustrator and Photoshop too.

  2. Very nice! She looks like a character, not just another pretty lady illustration :)
