Posting yesterday’s design a day late. After discovering the really interesting effects you can get with diffusion dithering in grayscale, I wondered how you can get the same effect in color. Fortunately, the next tutorial covers that very thing. I found a nice grayscale image of a feather that I thought would work nicely. In retrospect, I wish I’d used one without a water droplet. That part doesn’t look right at all.
After using the Diffusion Dither to convert the image, I selected all the black pixels and copied them to a new layer. I applied a green to blue gradient to that layer. That colored the black pixels. Then I applied a purple to white gradient to the background, which colored the white pixels. Solids or multicolor gradients would work just as well.
Note: Remember to preserve transparency for the layer with the black pixels.

This looks cool! And actually I like the water droplet – it gives it a kind of focal point.
Thanks, Karyn. I like the idea of the water droplet, but I wish it still had its reflective qualities. This particular technique doesn’t seem to work for that, but I’m sure I’ll learn something better suited to that sort of effect.
