I wanted to follow this Photoshop tutorial, but I can’t get the hand of the Photoshop pen tool, so I used the pen tool in Illustrator for the shapes, then brought it into Photoshop. I added a couple of filters to the end result.

I completed this project over 3 sessions that easily qualify for 3 days of design projects. This excellent tutorial taught me as much about drawing, which I don’t know a lot about, as it did Photoshop. It uses a lot of filters, especially gaussian blurs, and different blend modes.

So, for the past 6 weeks or so, I’ve been using the daily designing challenge to work a little bit every day to digitally scrapbook the photos from our family trip to Alaska in Aug. 2008.  I had been procrastinating because of the effort and mess created to just haul out all of my scrapping supplies and make sure I have the photos printed in the sizes I want ahead of time etc.

This one goes back to one of my original goals of learning more in Illustrator. This tutorial has taught me a great little shortcut – place using the template sets the imported image on a new layer that is automatically locked and 50% opacity, eliminating those 2 individual steps.

Valentine’s Day card (outside front and outside back, divided by yellow dashed rule) was inspired by applying the technique of creating overlapping strokes in Adobe Illustrator using the Appearance palette, saving the combination as a graphic style, and applying the graphic style to type, in this case “XOXO” which is Futura. What I like best about this card is the “batik” simulation affect.  Great and easy to follow video tutorial from Layers magazine here.
