“Homeless” kitty

“Homeless” kitty

No, not a stray. The kitty was supposed to be a part of the logo, but the recession ate the business when we were still at the initial sketches. That was going to be a fun project for a very nice client. Anyway, the kitty now officially has no place to go, so I thought I would digitize the best sketch and put it here. The image is based on the photos of the client’s kitty who “worked” full time at her boutique. It’s almost a “could you put my pet on the web site” case.

Digital flower, done in Harmony

Digital flower, done in Harmony

This is sort of hand drawn, although Harmony adds its own thoughts to every stroke. Like with drawing in ink, the beauty of it is in that you can’t correct anything. There is no eraser in this tool, nor can you realiably cover mistakes using a background color :)

Experiment with colored pencils on canvas

Experiment with colored pencils on canvas

This is a tiny thing, 3.5″ x 2.5″; the very first colored pencil on canvas for me. I got an idea from tiny oil (I think) paintings that I saw in a local gallery. But I don’t do oils or any other kinds of paint, so colored pencil had to do. Details here, if anyone is interested.

Graphite pencil sketch – a cat

Used a photo of a moderately sweet-looking cat as a reference, but for some reason I kept thinking of an outdoor cat of my friend who only comes home to eat and lick his wounds. The eyes are probably the only thing that the two have in common.

Not that I actually designed anything, but after a week of total techy madness even playing with Wordle looks like a creative activity.

A colored pencil sketch

A colored pencil sketch

This is a rendering of one of my bokeh photos. I think colored pencils lend themselves nicely to this job. A real thing would be more detailed and less “sketchy.” Gawd, how I would love to drop everything and just go do that! *going back to the daily grind instead*

Pen and ink sketch

Pen and ink sketch

Practicing quick ink sketching. It’s fun, it turns out ok even with mistakes because the medium is so beautiful and casual, and it is liberating because you can’t correct anything, so you just go ahead and do it. Then do it again, then again. This is the third attempt. You really don’t want to see the first two. Good news? One sketch takes way less than 15 minutes.

Should’ve really used powdered leads for this one instead of strokes. Good 30 minutes spent on trying to blend the unblendable.
