I worked on this one over several days. The first few days, I wasted a lot of time trying to work with images that weren’t really suitable for what I was trying to do — make an image stand out from its background. I thought about using the bride image from several days ago, but I got frustrated masking around the veil and hair. I seem to have completely forgotten how to use my wonderful Mask Pro plugin, and I just couldn’t get the results I wanted. So I switched to an entirely different image.

I’ve spent several days spinning my wheels trying to move ahead with my daily designs, not really knowing what has been holding me back. Most of my stock images are on disk, and the CD drive on my computer isn’t working, which hasn’t helped.
So I decided to switch to a different book for a few days to see if a change would help.

Posting three days worth of work at once, since I did all three exercises with the same image.
In preparation for the next tutorial in my Photoshop WOW! book, I created this business card for a fictitious client.

I freely admit that I know next to nothing about channels in Photoshop, and I know that entire books have been written about them. I should probably invest in at least one. Today I took some time to experiment a little.

Posting yesterday’s design a day late. After discovering the really interesting effects you can get with diffusion dithering in grayscale, I wondered how you can get the same effect in color. Fortunately, the next tutorial covers that very thing.

Following along in the Photoshop Wow! Book, the next tutorial deals with noise. In the exercise, I used Photoshop’s Noise filter and experimented with the different settings, such as uniform and gaussian, using the Monochromatic option, and some after-noise processing with the Despeckle filter and with the Fade command.
This image is the result of adding Noise at 20 percent with the Uniform setting and with theĀ Monochromatic option checked. Then, I used the Despeckle filter to blur the noise just a bit. Finally, I used Fade (Edit > Fade) to fade the Despeckle effect. I settled on an opacity of 50.

Cropped image used for halftone
The next tutorial in the book builds on the mezzotint exercise I did yesterday. This one uses a recognizable image rather than a random pattern as the halftone dot for the mezzotint effect. To the right is the stock image I used to make the halftone dot, after cropping and resizing.

I started out with the thought of doing the Cute Furry Monster tutorial in Illustrator that Cara tweeted about last week. Ten minutes in, I realized that I have forgotten just about everything I know about Illustrator and that I don’t even remember how to make a circle with a radial gradient.
So I’m planning some quality time with my Illustrator Classroom in a Book and restarting my DailyDesigning timer to do a tutorial from a Photoshop book that I picked up years ago and have barely touched. The book is The Photoshop 5/5.5 Wow Book by Linnea Dayton and Jack Davis. I told you I’ve had it for years. I’ve been using Photoshop for over 10 years, but I know I’ve barely touched the edges of what it can do. This challenge is my chance to play.
