the challenge: design something daily for 365 days

Designing Something Every Day

Designing Something Every Day

This blog was inspired by a blog post today on Smashing Magazine. So I decided to start a blog, invite WDG list members to sign up with me for this, and commit to posting at least once a week, what they did in the week. Of course, they can post daily too! That is the main thing, posting daily what you have done. I’ll give it a try. I am a photographer by training. I’ve actually won a contest, and have had a photo put into a NYC guide. Yay me!

Digital painting

Digital painting

This tutorial show how to turn a photograph into a digital painting. I didn’t like the final result using the filter settings in the tutorial, so I started over and changed some of them as I went along. The length of time is very dependent on how careful you are with the final step of painting with the smudge tool. I learned a helpful tip in using layers too. When copying and pasting part of a layer and you need to make sure they are aligned, change the blend mode to difference, and all will be black when they are aligned.

Buttons

Buttons

Earlier this year, I came across this tutorial for creating buttons in Photoshop, and bookmarked it for future reference. I also found a tutorial for creating buttons in Illustrator, but thought I’d give it a try in Photoshop first (since I’m a lot more comfortable with PS). It took me a little while to get the original button template to look how I wanted (about 30 minutes), but after the template’s created, it’s easy to duplicate the button template & clip different pictures into it.

Singing Apple

Singing Apple

So I took my apple from last week, and made it sing!

The idea is from this tutorial, but I did some of the mouth stuff differently, and also had to add some headphones cut out of another image.

Sketch of Country Store and Restaurant

Sketch of Country Store and Restaurant

I did this sketch a while back for a client that wanted something different and custom ‘country looking’ for her store. I used the sketch to produce her brochure and other collateral materials.

Ribbon

Ribbon

I wanted to follow this Photoshop tutorial, but I can’t get the hand of the Photoshop pen tool, so I used the pen tool in Illustrator for the shapes, then brought it into Photoshop. I added a couple of filters to the end result.

Disco Ball

Disco Ball

Looking for tutorials for the daily design challenge, I came across this fun tutorial for a disco ball. This project took a little bit longer than some of the other challenges, I spent about 45 minutes on the disco ball. I also ran into some difficulties with the tutorial, which may be due to the tutorial author using a different version of Adobe Illustrator than I was using (I have Adobe Illustrator CS4). If you’re interested in creating your own disco ball, read on for some of the discrepencies I found…

Experiment with colored pencils on canvas

Experiment with colored pencils on canvas

This is a tiny thing, 3.5″ x 2.5″; the very first colored pencil on canvas for me. I got an idea from tiny oil (I think) paintings that I saw in a local gallery. But I don’t do oils or any other kinds of paint, so colored pencil had to do. Details here, if anyone is interested.

Make Any Font Sketchy

Make Any Font Sketchy

I like sketchy fonts but only have a couple of them in my font book. So I was excited when I came across this tutorial & saw that you can turn any font into a sketchy one (and it’s simple)! This took me about 15 minutes to create & I used three different fonts. I used the font LondonTwo for “making” & “font”, the “a” is Courier New and “sketchy” is the Vintage font.

Color Spectrum

Color Spectrum

I’ve always liked the look of color spectrums, but I figured they were complicated to make. However, after finding this tutorial, I discovered that they’re quite simple! The most time consuming part was picking out the colors to use in my spectrums. It only took 15 minutes to complete all three of these spectrums!

Initial Character Sketch

Initial Character Sketch

I’m working on a custom fictional character for a client’s manuscript. This is an initial pencil sketch I did today in about 20/30 min. It’s pretty rough – guess that’s why I like to stick to digital graphics; digital graphics erase smoother, there are no smudges, you can turn pen weight on/off and shape duplication is easier! However, now that it’s time to move on to the digital stage of this illustration, I’m not looking forward to that pen tool…
